Can you drill into concrete with regular drill bits?

You can drill holes in concrete with a regular drill. Many people think that you cannot drill concrete with a regular drill. They believe that you need a special hammer drill with hardened drill bits. While these tools do make the job faster they are not necessary.

What's the difference between a masonry drill bit in a regular drill bit?

The main visual difference is that masonry bits don't have the blunt, gently rounded tip you'll see on standard general-purpose bits. Instead, the tip is shaped rather like an arrowhead or is sometimes pentagonal like the home plate on a baseball diamond.

Which drill bit is for masonry?

Masonry drills bits feature a arrowhead-shaped tip and are used for drilling holes into tough materials such as brick, stone and concrete. They are typically made from steel and used with a hammer drill, which hammers the bit into the surface as the drill bit rotates.

How can I tell if a drill bit is for masonry?

Masonry Drill Bits – Best for Stone and Brickwork

Masonry bits look like larger twist drills with a slightly tighter corkscrew shape. You can identify them thanks to their wide arrow-shaped heads. They're commonly used in hammer drills to grind masonry down as they cut through it.

How to Choose Masonry Drill Bits

Are concrete and masonry drill bits the same?

Are concrete and masonry drill bits the same? No. The major difference between concrete and masonry drills is their drilling heads. The cutting head of a concrete drill is relatively hard and made of Widia plate, while the cutting head of a masonry drill is made with a hardened metal material.

What colour is a masonry drill bit?

Masonry bits have a toughened tip which is quite different to normal twist drills. There is no special colour. Most masonry bits we use are plain grey or silver.

Can I use a regular drill bit for brick?

If you're wondering how to drill into brick without a hammer drill, it's not as simple or straightforward, but it is still doable. Drilling into a brick wall with a regular drill requires a high-quality masonry bit at the least. With no hammer action, the tool has to rely on its turning speed.

Are masonry drill bits universal?

Drill Bit Materials and Coatings. Not all drill bits are created equal, and there is no such thing as a universal or one-size-fits-all drill bit. The best drill bits for wood are not the same as the best types of bits for concrete. Likewise, the drill bit to use for brick won't work well on metal.

Can I use a metal drill bit on masonry?

While you can use a metal drill bit on masonry, it should always be your last resort since prolonged usage will lead to the rapid dulling and wearing down of the bit. Your best option is to use a specially made carbide-tipped masonry drill bit.

Why can't I drill into brick?

However, if you have old, fragile brick and you're mounting a heavy object that requires deep holes and expansion-style anchors, drilling into the brick may not be the best choice. Deep holes weaken the brick and expansion anchors can create enough circular stress to crack the brick.

What is the difference between concrete and masonry?

Masonry and concrete are not the same thing; as a general rule masonry is referring to the bricks, stones, and blocks used while concrete refers to a type of cement, other materials, and water that can be set into large forms to make a building without the smaller units of stones or bricks stacked upon each other.

Can you drill concrete without hammer drill?

There are two effective methods of drilling into concrete without a hammer drill. The first method is to use a masonry bit with a regular drill for smaller holes and the second option is to use diamond or carbide core bits to drill large diameter holes.

Are hammer drills only for concrete?

A hammer drill is perfect for light masonry. It works best at drilling holes in bricks, mortar and concrete blocks. But it can also handle the occasional hole in poured concrete.

Do all drill bits fit in any drill?

No, not all drill bits fit in all drills. 3/8” sized drills will accept up to 3/8” drill bit shafts. ½” sized drills will accept up to ½” drill bit shafts as well as and 3/8” sized bits.

How do I know which drill bit to use?

The diameter of the hole you drill should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the screw. So, for example, if you're using a 3.5 mm screw, use a drill bit with a diameter of 3 mm. If you're using wall anchors as well as screws, the drill bit and anchors should have the same diameter.

Can I use wood drill bit on brick?

You can never use wood or metal drilling bits to drill holes in masonry, you must use specific masonry drill bits designed for masonry. Masonry bits are excellent for drilling bricks, Thermalite or concrete blocks, mortar (cement), concrete and some tiles as well.

Can you drill into mortar with a regular drill?

Use the Right Drill and Drill Bit

The hammering action may make the job easier, but it's likely to cause the mortar to crumble. The job may take a little longer if you use a standard cordless or corded drill, but mortar is soft, so it won't take that much longer, and it's safer.

Do I need a special drill for concrete?

The most common type of drill bit that you use when drilling into concrete is masonry drill bits. This is true whether you are using a regular drill or a hammer drill. See also How Long Does it Take Quikrete to Dry? It would be best if you used a masonry drill bit made of tungsten carbide.

How can you tell the difference between concrete and wood drill bits?

The easiest way to tell the difference is by looking at the cutting tip geometry. On a wood bit there will be a sharp pointed spur in the center whereas the masonry bit has a carbide tipped cutting edges that are ground to 135-degree angle.

Can a cordless drill go through concrete?

In most cases, yes. While a cordless drill will not be as effective in drilling through concrete, it can get the job done. Your drill's battery power and other drilling features will play a role in its ability to drill into the concrete effectively.

Is masonry a brick?

Solid masonry is the good old-fashioned brick construction that was quite common up until the mid-1900s. This is also known as 'double brick,' 'solid brick,' or 'brick and block' construction. This form of masonry construction uses several layers (wythes) of brick with header bricks to hold them together.

Is masonry stronger than concrete?

Concrete blocks must have a minimum compressive strength of 1,900lbs per square inch, but many blocks' strength vastly exceeds this limit. If we measure the strength in psi, concrete blocks come out on top over bricks. The former can withstand 3,500 psi, whilst bricks' limit is found at 3,000 psi.
