What happens when you mix different engine oils?

Mixing different types can destabilize your motor oil, reducing its efficiency and affecting your engine's performance. The smartest choice is to stick with the oil type and oil change intervals recommended by your car's manufacturer and visit your local car care experts for affordable services.

Is it OK to top up engine oil with different brand?

You can add any engine oil as long as it has the right specifications — preferably with an official approval of the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). Not the brand, but the specification and viscosity indicated in your car's manual are your reference for using the right oil.

Which engine oils can be mixed?

Oils are miscible. You don't need to worry about adding one to the other in any proportion as they will easily form a solution. You can use 1 litre of 5W30 mixed with 5W40 and it will not cause any sort of ill effects to the engine.

Is mixing engine oil bad?

WHAT ABOUT MIXING ENGINE OIL BRANDS? Yes. It won't harm your engine to mix, for example, Quaker State^® motor oil with Pennzoil, as long as the oil you use is the weight (or viscosity) recommended in your vehicle owner's manual.

Will Mixing 10 Motor Oils Damage an Engine? Let's find out!

Can you mix 10W30 and 10W40?

Mixing 10W30 with 10W40

Some say that mixing them is fine as long as you don't live in freezing weather. Even if you put together synthetic and conventional blends of these motor oils, they show no harm to your vehicle. However, this is true only if you mix in a quart of the other type to your usual engine oil.

What happens if you put new oil on top of old oil?

What happens if you put new oil on top of old oil? When you mix new and old oil, the new oil becomes “watered down” with the lack of interfacial tension and strains to do its' job. Be sure to have your oil changed as soon as possible.

Can I use 10w40 instead of 5w30?

Your vehicle does not use 5W-30 oil. The recommended oil viscosity for your vehicle, according to Kia documentation, is 10W-40. If you drive the vehicle in exceptionally cold weather, well below 32 degrees, you can use 5W-30 oil but even 10W-40 is still perfectly OK to use if outdoor temperatures are below freezing.

Will thicker oil damage my engine?

Using oil that is thicker than recommended may lead to a decrease in fuel economy, a higher load on your engine, and even a shorter life for your engine. Conversely, using thinner, lighter-weight oil than recommended can cause excessive wear and shorter life.

What happens if you put 10w30 instead of 5w30?

Can I Mix 10w30 and 5w30? Most oils will mix perfectly, provided they have a similar synthetic. Therefore, there is no problem in mixing 10w30 and 5w30 since one will be topping up. Mixing the viscosity of oils will not have any effect on the engine.

Can I use 5W 20 instead of 5w30?

Mixing 5W-20 and 5W-30 (or any other oils for that matter) may lead to faster wear and tear of your engine and eventually cause problems with the basic functioning of critical engine parts. And even if your engine allows it, you won't get any noticeable results by mixing different viscosity grade oils.

Can I use 5w40 instead of 5w30?

In practice, this means that each oil is just as viscous at lower temperatures and will remain viscous at -30°C, however 5w40 oil outperforms 5w30 oils at higher temperatures, being effective up to ambient temperatures of 50°C, as opposed to 30°C.

Do high mileage cars need thicker oil?

High-mileage oils have ingredients to take care of older engines, like conditioners, seal swells, antioxidants, detergents and wear or friction additives. Typically they use a viscosity modifier that is durable and won't lose viscosity very easily. These oils need to stay thicker longer to protect engine parts.

Is 10w40 good for high mileage?

Designed for high mileage vehicles

Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W-40 motor oil is recommended by ExxonMobil for use in high mileage vehicles (even those that have used lower quality conventional oils^†), including: Cars. Trucks.

Which engine oil is best for old engines?

Monograde oils are still widely available, primarily because they're used in very hot climates, or in heavy-duty applications such as mining or construction equipment. These single-grade oils can be used in 1950s and older cars – generally SAE 30 to SAE 50 – but most owners use multi-grade.

Can you mix 5w40 and 10w40?

If you have drained the engine oil and plan on replacing it with the 5W-40, the small remainder of the 10W-40 will mix in with this new oil.

What is the best engine oil for hot weather?

There are a few ways to get your car prepared for summer with synthetic oils. If you're capable of changing your oil, you can find synthetics at auto retailers. Look for containers with codes such as 0W-20, 5W-20, and 5W-30. These correspond to specific synthetic oil mixtures approved for standard vehicles.

Is Thicker oil better for older engines?

A: Yes. This is a practical method to improve oil pressure in an older, high-mileage engine. The slightly thicker oil film from the heavier base weight oil - 10W - can help protect worn engine bearings as well.

Can you start your car right after adding oil?

Ideally, you want to let your car run for about 2-3 minutes after an oil change. Having your engine run for a few minutes will circulate the new oil, which is good to do before driving. It's also a good idea to leave your car running to ensure that the engine doesn't leak oil from the oil filter or the oil drain.

Can you add oil to a cold engine?

You may also opt to add oil when you have a cold engine. You won't risk burning yourself if you're changing the oil rather than just adding oil. However, you'll notice that the thickness of the oil will make it more difficult to drain the oil.

Should I check my oil when the engine is hot or cold?

If checking the oil yourself, make sure the car is parked on level ground and, with most cars, the engine is cold, so you don't burn yourself on a hot engine part. (With some cars, the automaker recommends that the oil be checked after the engine has been warmed up.)

What happens if I put 10W40 instead of 10W30?

10W40 has a higher viscosity than 10W30. This means that when you pour 10W40 into your engine, it will have a harder time flowing through the engine and moving around the parts. However, if you use 10W40 instead of 10W30, the oil will stay in place better without leaking out or dispersing throughout your engine.

What's the difference between 10W-30 and 10W-40?

The difference between 10W-30 and a 10W-40 is the high temperature viscosity. Obviously, a 10W-40 is thicker than a 10W-30 at high temperature.

Can I mix oil weights?

Given that standards are in place, does that mean you can mix and match oil weights? The truth is simple: don't mix two different oils that have different weights (viscosities). Viscosity Grades might sound pretty scientific, but the simple fact is that this is what keeps your engine running smoothly.

Is 5w30 good for high mileage?

Full synthetic 5w30 oils are recommended for high-performing cars, those that carry heavy loads, and vehicles operating in high temperatures. These oils are made with high-performance additives to enable them to deal with extreme conditions.
