Can I drive with a bad purge valve?
Nathan Sanders Can a bad purge valve cause damage?
Spark plugs damage
Due to the inability of a bad purge valve to redirect fuel vapors to the vehicle's engine cylinders for combustion, the excessive fuel vapors lead to abnormality in the fuel and air mixture created and burnt in each of the engine's combustion cycles.
Can you still drive your car with a bad purge valve?
It's certainly possible to drive with a broken purge valve, but we don't recommend it. The longer you drive with a bad valve, the more risk you run of damaging the vehicle's EVAP system and other parts. There's also the possibility of wasting fuel and pumping out more emissions than is necessary.
Can purge valve damage engine?
There are engine problems. In the event that your canister purge valve is stuck open, it can cause a vacuum leak that can adversely affect your engine. As a result, the car's air to fuel ratio will be changed, causing rough idling (the car feels bouncy when the engine is running), and difficulty starting the car.
What happens if purge valve is stuck closed?
If the vapor canister purge valve is stuck closed instead of open, the valve won't push any fuel vapors back into the engine. Instead, they'll run straight out of the exhaust, which will cause much higher emission levels. Of course, you probably won't notice this unless you take your vehicle in for an emission test.
SYMPTOMS OF BAD PURGE VALVE. HOW TO KNOW PURGE VALVE IS BAD
What happens if the purge valve fails?
If the canister purge valve fails and sticks open, it will create a vacuum leak that can affect the engine idle speed and quality. A vacuum leak can also be caused by a broken or damaged purge solenoid or any of the hoses attached to it.
Will a bad purge valve throw a code?
If your car's computer detects higher or lower than expected purging from the valve, it will illuminate the check engine light. Common error codes include P0441 and P0446, as well as other EVAP codes.
Can a car run without a purge valve?
This valve, although it's a small component, is crucial for your EVAP system to work properly. Without it, your engine is going to have a hard time working and it will run extremely rich. This rich fuel to air mixture can also have an impact in the long run on other components in your car.
Will a purge valve make noise?
The purge valve ticking noise is most likely normal and should not be noticed inside the cab when the windows are up. If it is too loud inside the cab, then have the valve replaced. The purge valve may be leaking vapor by it and into the engine when you are refueling.
How do I know if my purge valve is stuck open?
The most common problem with the purge valve is when it sticks or does not close fully. This may cause the "Check Engine" light to come on. In some cars, a stuck-open purge valve can cause difficulty starting right after refueling at a gas station: for the first few seconds the engine may run rough and stumble.
Can you fix a purge valve yourself?
Replacing the purge valve yourself is very doable so you can save a few dollars on labor.
Will bad purge valve cause no start?
Can a bad purge valve cause a car to stall? A faulty purge valve causes no start, stall and hesitation condition when the purge valve leaks allowing full flow of stored gasoline vapors into the engine or excess air, causing a no start, stall or hesitation.
How often are purge valves bad?
Normally the canister purge solenoid lasts the life of the vehicle, but it can wear out from time to time. If the canister purge solenoid starts to go out, the Check Engine light will come on and your car will not pass an emissions test.
What does a purge valve do?
A purge valve is an integral component of a vacuum material conveying system that not only provides an on/off flow of material into a conveying line, but also a way to purge that conveying line with air at the end of every material loading cycle.
What is EVAP canister?
The canister purge valve is a vital part of the Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP). The EVAP system seals the fuel system of your vehicle to prevent harmful fuel vapors from entering the environment.
How much does it cost to replace a purge valve?
A failed purge valve typically results in a check engine light along with other symptoms. The average cost to replace a purge valve is $130. The price for the replacement valve itself is between $35 and $100, depending on your vehicle's make and model.
Can a purge valve be cleaned?
Locate the valve; unplug the vacuum lines and the electrical connector. You can now remove the valve from the car. You can try to clean it without opening it. If that doesn't work and you have good technical skills, or you want to do a deep cleaning, you could open the purge solenoid valve.
How long does it take for check engine light to go off after purge valve?
The reset can happen automatically after around 10 to 20 cycles. A cycle is a phase where you turn on the car and turn it off again. For other vehicles, you'll have to drive around 50 to 100 miles before it resets. As you can imagine, you can drive the car with the check engine light on for long periods.

If the computer is saying that the purge valve is stuck open it is usually because there is an EVAP leak in the system. If the purge valve is new I usually check the wiring and the signal going to the valve to make sure it is not shorted keeping the valve open.
What are the symptoms of an EVAP leak?
The most common symptom of an EVAP leak is fuel smell from your car and a check engine light on your dashboard. You may also notice issues like poor engine performance or a failed emission test in rare cases.
