What can cause a gas furnace to explode?

A furnace explosion is usually the result of ignition and instantaneous combustion of highly flammable gas, vapor, or dust that has accumulated in a boiler. The effect of the force from the explosion is often much greater than the boiler combustion chamber can withstand.

Do gas furnaces ever explode?

The modern gas furnace is much safer than electric space heaters, and furnaces are built to high safety standards. Although it is possible for a gas furnace to either catch fire or explode, it's highly unlikely. If there is a danger of this happening, the furnace will usually simply shut off—as it's designed to.

How do you know if your furnace is going to explode?

Noises such as popping, groaning, banging, or rattling that aren't normally produced by the furnace suggest its components are malfunctioning. In addition to the loud noise, if the blower is frequently turning on and off and blowing cool air into your home, there is a high possibility that your furnace is not working.

Can gas furnaces catch fire?

Yes, a furnace can catch fire.

The following are reasons your furnace can catch fire: Your furnace's air filter is blocked. Your furnace's gas pressure is too high. There is a crack in your furnace's heat exchanger.

What are the dangers of a gas furnace?

Gas Furnace Safety. If you have a gas furnace, it is important to know that it may produce some carbon monoxide that is released outside your home through the furnace's vent. Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that can cause flu-like symptoms, disorientation, confusion, and even death.

How do you stop a furnace from exploding?

Precautions to Prevent Boiler Explosion:

1. Inspection of pump inlets and loose connections.
2. Installation of ash removal system to avoid ash accumulation in the furnace or other equipment.
3. Pump priming.
4. Regular checking of safety valves.
5. The boiler should be operated as per its design pressure.

How long does a gas furnace usually last?

A well-maintained furnace can last at least 15 to 20 years, but completing annual maintenance and being diligent with repairs can extend its life even longer.

Why is my furnace making a boom sound?

When delayed ignition occurs, the released gas just keeps accumulating because, for whatever reason, it won't ignite. The gas will continue to collect inside the furnace until it finally makes contact with a flame. When that happens, the gas ignites in a small explosion, creating a pop, boom, or bang that you can hear.

Why does my furnace sound like its going to explode?

Did you hear a loud boom coming from your furnace? You are most likely hearing a delayed ignition. When too much gas builds up in the combustion chamber and the ignition is delayed, your furnace experiences a small gas explosion. This can be caused by low gas pressure, clogged burners, and dirty equipment.

Can a furnace explode a house?

Gas Furnaces Can Explode

With a gas furnace comes the risk that there could be a fire or an explosion if the gas leaks. This is exactly what happened to a home in Ontario; a gas explosion killed one man and damaged 40 other houses.

When should I worry about my furnace noise?

In most cases, it is wise to call a service technician. A pinging or popping sound is most likely coming from one of the ducts and is not really something to worry about. If you hear an odd vibrating noise or whining, it may indicate a problem with your furnace and a technician really needs to check it out.

Is my furnace Safe?

If your furnace is burning a blue flame, very little CO is created and the unit is considered safe. The presence of a yellow or red flame indicates incomplete combustion and could mean dangerous levels of carbon monoxide are being produced.

How much is a new furnace for a 2000 square foot home?

The average cost range for purchasing and installing a gas furnace designed to heat a 2,000-square-foot home with a 97% efficiency rating ranges from $4,000 to $8,000, with most homeowners spending around $6,000 total on a high-efficiency gas furnace replacement in a 2,000 sq. ft.

Can a gas furnace last 30 years?

Regardless of the logic you follow, the 30-year mark is at or close to the maximum lifespan you should expect from your furnace. Even though furnaces can last 30 years or beyond, most experts recommend that you start shopping for a new furnace when your existing unit is 15 years old.

How often should a gas furnace be serviced?

A gas furnace should be serviced at least once a year, preferably, though, in both the spring and the fall. Annual maintenance, including a thorough examination and cleaning of the parts that commonly malfunction, like the air filter, the fan, the pilot light, and the heat exchanger, can usually prevent these problems.

How likely is a furnace fire?

The National Fire Protection Association says more than one in six home fires start from heating equipment, which is the second most common cause of a fire behind cooking. While most heating-related fires start from either space heaters or fire places, more than one out of every 10 starts with a central heating system.

Is a gas furnace in the attic safe?

An attic furnace, or any furnace that is located above ground level, is less likely to flood. Installing a heater in the attic provides safety in flood-prone locations. Even when furnaces are installed on the main floor, floodwaters frequently overflow the first floor, severely damaging the equipment.

Can a leaking furnace cause a fire?

Defective or improperly maintained furnaces can ignite fires and leak toxic exhaust fumes into a home or building causing injury or death.

What is the safety concern when a furnace burner goes out?

Heat exchangers with cracks or holes that have rusted through also cause flame roll out, which increases the danger of carbon monoxide gas entering into the home. Carbon monoxide is deadly in small concentrations, and it is also odorless and tasteless so it cannot be detected by a person's natural senses when present.

Is an old furnace a fire hazard?

Fire Hazard: Without proper ventilation, old furnaces are a fire hazard. It is important to keep any flammable materials away from your old furnace as this increases the chance of a fire.

Is it safe to run furnace without cover?

How do you tell if your furnace is giving off carbon monoxide?

Signs of a Furnace Carbon Monoxide Leak

1. Pilot Light Frequently Blowing Out.
2. Fallen Soot in Fireplaces.
3. Soot-Colored or Brown/Yellow-Colored Stains Around the Leaking Appliance.
4. Solid Fuel Fires Burn Lower Than Normal.
5. Smell of Gas (carbon monoxide is odorless, but a leakage may be accompanied by exhaust gases you can smell)
