In a study published in the open access journal BMC Biology, the researchers from the University's Department of Biology & Biochemistry found that the Grb10 gene inherited from the mother restricts growth and promotes a leaner body, whereas the Dlk1 gene inherited from the father has the opposite effect, increasing ...
Is muscle shape genetic?
You sometimes hear people say they're trying to change the shape of their muscles but that's not actually possible. The shape of a muscle is determined by genetics, not by training. Why are some babies so muscular?
In fact, the German researchers have already found that the child has a mutation in the gene that produces myostatin. "Myostatin is a growth factor that regulates muscle mass during embryonal development as well as after birth. Myostatin prevents the muscles from growing too big," said one of the researchers, Dr.

Bodybuilding is based on the idea that muscle size is linked to strength, but new research suggests that might not be true. Scientists have found that weight training which leads to bigger muscles doesn't necessarily make people stronger.
What is the Hercules gene?
Those with the “Hercule's Gene” have an abnormal or mutated MSTN gene that causes the body to produce lower level of myostatin. With less myostatin to block muscle growth, one can produce more muscle.
