How many spider webs can stop a plane?

We used for the silk the specific heat capacity of water of 1 J/gK. The results: To stop a 180,000 kg Boeing-747 flying 1080 km/h (300 m/s) in 300 meters one needs 1,440,000 million Araneus diadematus spiders or 3000 million Nephila spiders to make a one kilometre long thread with a diameter of 21.4 cm.

Can a spider web stop a train?

That may sound like a lot, but real spiderwebs are just as strong. The web of an orb-weaver spider, for instance, can have a stiffness as high as 12 gigapascals. So, if spider silk was scaled up to human proportions, it really would be able to stop a rampaging train!

Can a spider web hold a human?

Answer 7: A spider's silk is around 3 micrometers (0.003 millimeters) in diameter, so it is very thin. It is useful to think of a rope made of many threads as an analogy. How strong would spider webs be if they were human sized?

In fact, in terms of tensile strength, which is the maximum amount of stress a material can endure before breaking, spider silk is five times tougher than steel. If it was converted to human size, it would be strong enough to stop a jetliner in its flightpath.

Why are spiderwebs so strong?

Spider threads contain many long molecules called proteins. These proteins are aligned along the thread and all work together to hold up the spider. In part, spider thread is strong because there are so many proteins all lined up together.

How strong is Spider-Man to stop a train?

Stone and his fellow students calculated that the force needed to stop four New York City subway cars packed with nearly 1,000 people total would be 300,000 newtons, after taking into account the momentum of the train at full speed, the time it takes the train to come to rest after the webs are attached, and the ...

How hard did Spider-Man stop the train?

The three University of Leicester physics students worked out the force needed to overcome the train's momentum - an enormous 300,000 Newtons. To avoid breaking, every cubic metre of Spider-Man's web would have to soak up almost 500 million joules of energy.

Can Superman stop a moving train?

Superman is able to stop it, but being as this is set in his early days, when he was weaker and couldn't even fly yet, stopping the train almost kills him, allowing Lex and the military to capture him. How strong is spider web silk?

Spider silk fibers have a strength rating of 1.1 gigapascals, which is not as strong as Kevlar's 3.6 gigapascals. But, they are tougher than Kevlar. Rigid spider silk has a toughness factor of 180 megajoules/meter compared to Kelvar's toughness factor of 50 megajoules/meter.

Could giant spiders exist?

In 1980 paleontologist Mario Hunicken made a startling announcement; he had found the remains of the largest spider to have ever lived.
