Can you hear a sonic boom at high altitude?

Depending on the aircraft's altitude, sonic booms reach the ground two to 60 seconds after flyover. However, not all booms are heard at ground level. The speed of sound at any altitude is a function of air temperature. A decrease or increase in temperature results in a corresponding decrease or increase in sound speed.

Can you hear a sonic boom from 50000 feet?

The width ends up being about one mile for each 1,000 feet of altitude, so an aircraft flying at 50,000 feet would produce a sonic boom cone about 50 miles wide. Though Wednesday's sonic boom did not have as much of an effect as others in the past, sometimes booster sonic booms can be heard all the way in Orlando.

At what altitude can you break the sound barrier?

This slotted-throat approach allowed accurate data collection as air was efficiently channeled around the models and speeds crept up to and slightly past the speed of sound: roughly 760 miles per hour (1,223 kph) at sea level and 660 mph (1,062 kph) at altitudes of 35,000 feet (10,668 meters) and above.

Why are there no sonic booms anymore?

Why don't we ever hear sonic booms any more? Noise abatement regulations halted supersonic flight (by civil aircraft) over U.S. land. The Concorde could still take off and land here because it broke the sound barrier over the ocean, but it's no longer in service.

No More Supersonic Boom | The Area Rule Explained

Do jet pilots hear the sonic boom?

If you're WONDERing about how pilots handle sonic booms, they actually don't hear them. They can see the pressure waves around the plane, but people on board the airplane can't hear the sonic boom. Like the wake of a ship, the boom carpet unrolls behind the airplane.

Is there a sonic boom at Mach 2?

The speed of sound is the same as the wave speed. The plane makes a sonic boom when it's going faster than sound. There is nothing special happening at Mach 2.

Has a 747 ever broken the sound barrier?

Key. While aircraft are put through extreme testing during their certification, these are never intended to be actually faced. The 747-100, for instance, was tested up to Mach 0.99, almost breaking the sound barrier. Other 747s, such as Air Force One, have approached the sound barrier but never crossed it.

How long would it take to go around the world at Mach 20?

Mach 20. If a plane flew at Mach 20 without stopping to refuel, it would take 1 to 2 hours to circumnavigate the earth. Theoretically, if a plane flew on Mach 27 without stopping to refuel, it would only take it 1 hour and 10 minutes to circumnavigate the earth.

Are sonic booms illegal?

In the 1950s and '60s, Americans filed some 40,000 claims against the Air Force, whose supersonic jets were making a ruckus over land. Then in 1973, the FAA banned overland supersonic commercial flights because of sonic booms—a prohibition that remains in effect today.

Is Thunder a sonic boom?

Keep in mind these shock waves are produced when the intense heat of lightning superheats air, causing it to expand faster than the speed of sound. Thunder is essentially a sonic 'boom'.

Can sonic boom be eliminated?

The key to eliminating the sonic boom is in the design of an airframe. In a conventional supersonic jet, the shockwaves coalesce as they expand away from the nose and tail - leading to two distinct sonic booms.

Why don t Rockets make sonic booms?

A sonic boom is heard by observers when the shock wave(s) produced by an object moving at supersonic speed passes by them. This is unlikely to happen with a rocket launch since the vehicle is at high altitude and moving away.

Can sonic boom be heard from 60000 feet?

Yes, a sonic boom produced at 60,000' can be heard on the ground. These measurements are from aircraft with different altitude.

What altitude did Concorde cruise at?

Cruising at Mach 2 -- or 1,350 mph -- at 60,000 feet, Concorde flew five miles above and 800 mph faster than the subsonic 747s plodding across the Atlantic.

Can sonic boom break windows?

MYTH: SONIC BOOMS INEVITABLY CRACK WINDOWS, DAMAGE BUILDINGS

Unmitigated sonic booms can cause windows or old plaster to crack, but for civil applications this is extremely rare. The intensity of a sonic boom can be measured in pounds per square foot (psf) of air pressure.

What is the highest Mach ever reached?

The Fastest Fighter Jet Ever

It reached record top speed of Mach 6.72 or 4,520 mph, which is more than five times the speed of sound. The X-125 was an experimental hypersonic rocket-powered aircraft developed in the 1960's and still holds the record for the highest speed ever recorded by a crewed, powered aircraft.

How fast would you have to drive to keep up with the sun?

The earth has a circumference of about 40,000 kilometres and rotates once every 24 hours. If you were on the equator at sea level, you would need to travel at 1666kmh to keep up with the setting sun (40,000km/24hrs).

Can a 747 reach Mach 1?

Tom Cole, a spokesman at Boeing Commercial Airplane Co., said original flight tests of 747s conducted in 1969 and 1970 took 747-100 models to speeds of Mach 0.99. In addition, Boeing knows one case in which a 747 operated by Evergreen International made an emergency descent at speeds that exceeded Mach 1, he said.

Can a passenger plane go Mach 1?

No aircraft company would build a jet designed to cruise right at Mach 1. In the transonic speed range (from roughly the high Mach 0.8s to around 1.1), there are many areas of mixed subsonic and supersonic air flow over the airframe, and following the localized supersonic flow there are shock waves.

Does a bullet break the sound barrier?

In fact, bullets can move fast enough to break the sound barrier. Contrary to what the name might suggest, the sound barrier is not an actual wall or barrier. Rather, it is the hypothetical limit to the speed an object can travel before it exceeds the speed of sound.

Does a bullet create a sonic boom?

Most bullets make small sonic booms when flying through the air, which to our ears sound like a loud, distinct “crack!” For the Pentagon's special forces, that makes it hard to be sneaky about what they're shooting.

Can you hear a supersonic plane coming?

Short answer: Yes, pilots of a supersonic jet can still hear the humming of the engines when their plane breaks the sound barrier if the sound is transmitted through the air inside the plane (however, they cannot hear the sounds coming from the outside).

Is there a sonic boom at Mach 3?

It only means that the boom was generated at speeds equal to or greater than Mach 1. For example, a plane travelling at Mach 3 would still produce a sonic boom but you'd still only hear it once because the "boom" would only reach your ear once.
